literally means "cotton castle" in turkish, pamukkale is (supposed to be) one of those wonderful ethereal places you often see as picturesque magical photos of thermal pools and travertines. i was kind of disappointed being here because the pools were mostly dry. i was expecting a rather vast area but now visitors can only visit the main path and the other pools that aren't on the main path are basically dry out.
continuing after the main path is the ruins of hierapolis (holy city), which was built at the end of the second century b.c by the kings of pergamon. we went to the theater which was built on 60 a.d. and is now partly under restoration. it's quite a large area of the ruins and sadly it's pretty much impossible to explore all the them on such heat.
