Most people think of themselves as individuals, that there's no-one on the planet like them.
This thought motivates them to get out of bed, eat food, and walk around like nothing's wrong.
Those lines open Submarine, a movie narrated by an awkward young boy struggling in his teen age. Story-wise it might not be something new, but how it's presented gives the movie a whole different edge that has to be much appreciated. It's supposed to be a comedic movie but delivered in such a sad and noir way, on the other hand it's supposed to be a sad movie but delivered in such a comedic and lighthearted way. Artfully made and cleverly written, it makes the whole movie become an enjoyable experience. I feel like every line of the movie is produced by such a thoughtful mind and every scene is treated so artistically retro-ish that even visually alone I could already enjoy the movie apart from how the story goes. And I agree with most reviewers that I can't help not to compare to Wes Anderson's and Spike Jonze's.
