i was actually excited about bukittinggi cause i thought i've been here. and in my mind it was a nice city on a higher land with lots of trees and i remember spending time eating a particular fruit in some kind of forest. now, i clearly do not know where did i get that memory from cause the reality was absolutely different. the city wasn't exciting at all. we arrived in the evening, then went around a bit and at about nine we'd already headed back home. how boring.
what excited me was the place we stayed at. when i first looked at the photos my friend showed me on airbnb, i wasn't excited at all. i was like ya okay whatever, it didn't look nice but as long as we had a place to crash, i didn't bother much about any details whatsoever. but the minute we arrived, i was actually really liking it. it's a typical old house which look very horizontal, very geometrically simple with nice proportion. like the old houses before the 90s. and inside usually it has high ceiling and wide spaces. it clearly was an old house with old window frames, etc., everything looks nostalgic yet still in a good condition. i'm always drawn to this particular typology of houses. somehow it reminds me of a sense of childhood, though i'm not sure which part of my childhood did it ring to.
the next morning i went on a walk around the neighborhood in the hope to find much more of similar type of houses to please the eye, but there wasn't many left, just one or two, which was sad. but at least it was a nice walkable neighborhood.
