orbit ever after

short films are underrated. it's not every day you get a luxurious two hours of free time to enjoy a good story in a cinematic experience. i love this one particularly for how they put much attention to details on the production design and light. one of the opening scenes reminds me somewhat of the little prince. also, aren't we all constantly craving for that something to keep feeling alive?

as a still i usually don't fancy this type of photography. the editorial type. the post card beauty type. usually required high technical knowledge and gears. but. as a time lapse, this one totally gets me. i don't know how many times i've watched it already today. it's just too beautiful. and it shows how important lighting design is, something that i'm currently put interest in.

furniture factory

Lucas Maassen has employed his 3 sons, Thijme (9), Julian (7) and Maris (7). His Sons are responsible for the paint job of the furniture which is build in the factory. They get paid 1 Euro for every piece of furniture they paint. As agreed by the contract they signed.

Due to Dutch child labour laws it is only possible for Thijme, Julian and Maris to work for 3 hours a week. As a result of this the production speed has became a crucial factor in the process. Time limitations are set, they contribute to the typical LM&S aesthetics.

Now seriously. HOW awesome is this? The idea. The execution. The video. The stills. Totally the most brilliant thing you can come up with having three boys in the house.

everyone has a story

"Not everyone can write music or own a camera, but everyone can communicate in some way and everyone has stories that all of us can learn from". I didn't know that watching and listening to spoken word poetry could be as interesting as listening to music.

When I was a kid my parents regularly bought chinese editions of Reader's Digest, and they have lots of them stacked on the rack. There were only two sections of the magazines that I could read cause they're in English, the short story and the quotes. I think that was the very beginning of how I started to love words, specially in English, how the combination of words could form beautiful meanings. And I still do until today. If synesthesia is a condition where people usually associate things with colors, I wonder if there's a certain term for a fascination with words.

Sometimes I wish I studied English literature instead of architecture. Sometimes.

midnight in paris

Opening scene from Midnight in Paris, a must watch Woody Allen movie. Too beautiful not to post. I know they're all the perfect postcard pictures beauty, but still...

ps. i love everything about the movie except the ending. Almost all scenes are beautiful I didn't even bother to take screenshots. And where else could we see Fitzgerald, Hemingway, T. S. Eliot, Picasso, Matisse, and all other legends packed in one movie? And Adrien Brody as Salvador Dalí? Wins.

The Daydream Club - In The Arms of Another Day

I was browsing some new songs for midnight working when I found the Burberry Acoustic. Well it turns out that they were actually part of Burberry campaign showcases young British bands wearing Burberry clothing in the videos.

Music at it's best familiar and warmth feeling, acoustical, leaving all the wires behind. I don't know but I think somehow music is easier to relate to when it's acoustical. Although I'm not familiar with the songs but they seems easier to perceive than with all sophisticated sounds which require a higher interconnection between the audience and the performer.

Check out the videos and imagine how beautiful it is to play your music together with the nature, at the beach, in the garden, by the river, at the Great Wall of China! And they were all shot so beautifully with attractive soft tones you could grasp the acoustical sense easily. Oh, and the opening introductions by each band in that British accent are totally irresistible.

These give me the feeling of experiencing something new, something strange, yet softly familiar and beautiful.

because it's a beautiful world

I heard about Ólafur Arnalds, an Icelandic musician, from a friend and when I tried to search his songs I found this incredibly amazing video. To me it is so beautiful I couldn't stop staring at it almost this whole day. The song and the video convinced me that amazingly inspiring people exist in this world, and they make this world a better place.

It is so evoking and heart breaking, I wish I have a heart which I could pour out wholely to something that make me feel content of myself.

I think my colleagues wondered why I spent so much time staring at these moving colors and started to think if I was possessed or had autistic or something. Maybe I do, I don't know. I was so lost in this piece of art, my mind wandered, and the whole day I feel like I was in another world. By myself. But wouldn't it feel great if it's just you and the nature and the people you love, instead of worrying about things like economy, or fashion, or gadgets, or achievements. If only I could choose to be born somewhere else, some other time.

miniature madness

Beside stop motion animation, I've always amazed with time lapse photography, both technically and how patient the photographer must be. But most time lapse photography I saw is of nature, landscape, cloudscape, or construction project, which is why this one is one of the raddest I've ever seen.

animal arithmetic

I've been listening to Jónsi since last year and have been greatly admire all his songs, and of course his band, Sigur Rós. But it's only recently that I streamed through couple of his interviews and boy can I not love this guy even more. To my surprise he looks way much positive than I thought he would be, and he even said himself that he is a positive person. He's openly gay, his right eye is blind, and he's a raw food vegan. He might looks weird, but for me he's weird in a way I feel like I could relate to. The way he often scratch or put his hand on his head or play with something (which he did a lot in some other one on one interviews) doesn't look so right, but I feel like I usually do the same when I talk to other person.

It's amazing listening to the creative process of the album, the whole animal theme and sounds. And if you've already digested his whole album, you'll know what he means when he said his album is about hopes and fears, hopes that make you go for everything you want to do, and the fear in the stomach that keeps you down, not doing what you have to do. And the whole stage concept talk is inspirational. Even when he talks about his nosy neighbor who listens to Justin Timberlake, he sounds so funny and positive, like the kind of person you want to befriended with.

On some the interview with BBC, his bandmate, Kjarri, talks about how the isolated condition of their country Iceland relates to creativity, and he said this, "The creativity definitely comes from this isolation. I think that people just feel the need to create something, painting, writing a book.. which can be annoying sometimes specially, you know, these days, because if you're not doing something, you're nobody. Why, you're not writing a book?"

I always thought that I was born weird and awkward but this guy here reminds me that there are still a lot of things I have to do. And I have to really channel all the desire to do and to create.

ps. If I ever become a good photographer and being asked of a person who I really want to photograph, it would not be Monica Belucci, like one of my favorite local photographer, but it will be Jónsi. Definitely.

improvisation and communication

I always got fascinated by the improvisation and communication that happen in jazz and rap music. Fascination is the reason why I enjoy sitting as an audience although I don't really understand what they are playing and what they're trying to say with their music. But there are these improvisation and communication (and also the extraordinary skills) that I never quite understand how the heck that that happens. It feels like something that's beyond logic to me.

I found this TEDx video which tried to explain how that all happens. Well in the end he didn't give any answer and I don't usually like it when everything is tried to be explained scientifically, but I found this video interesting and I do enjoy listening to intellectual talks. And it reminds me of my fascination of things, which feels good. I always need fascination, it's like a basic need. So, yeah, here goes..

stare lassù

I so love this video and it reminds me of my experience being hung up above, thanks to my friend who works at a building construction site. This picture below is part of my university complex taken from a bucket hung by a tower crane about more than 5 floor high above the ground. It was scary at first looked at how small and fragile the bucket is, but once we get used to it, it feels amazing.

Well this one is actually a short film by the genius Spike Jonze who also directed the awesome Where The Wild Things Are and the absurd Being John Malkovich. I have to agree with Alex who posted this on iso50 about how I attracted to the whole uniqueness of the whole project rather than any spesific aspect of the plot. You can watch it on its website.

This one, also found on iso50, is simply an amazing inspiring video by David Altobelli. It's the kind of video that makes me feel okay to be depressed cause it enable me to appreciate simple beauty even more. If only the cranes I hung on my bedroom could look as beautiful..
